Billy Mohler is a Grammy Nominated writer, producer, and multi instrumentalist from Laguna Beach, CA. Mohler graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where he studied Jazz Performance/Composition. He received the distinguished Outstanding Performer Award his senior year. The same year he graduated Mohler got 3rd Place in the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Competition in the Jazz category. Mohler was selected to be one of only five members chosen to be a part of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at USC. While at the Monk Institute he performed and studied with jazz superstars Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Christian McBride, Brian Blade, Joshua Redman, Billy Childs, Cassandra Wilson, James Carter, Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Barry Harris amongst others. While attending the program Mohler performed at U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. for Madeline Albright and Nellie Monk’s (Thelonious Monk’s wife) birthday in an ensemble consisting of Mohler, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Giovanni Hildago.
After the Monk program Mohler joined a local Los Angeles band, The Calling, RCA Records. The Calling had tremendous success selling over one million records in the US and 6 million worldwide. The single “Wherever You Will Go” was their most successful hit, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and toping the Adult Top 40 chart for 23 weeks. It was named the number-one song of the 2000-2010 decade on the Adult Pop Charts in Billboard Magazine. Outside the US, the song experienced similar success, peaking atop the music charts in Italy and New Zealand, reaching number three in the UK, number five in Australia, and peaking within the top 10 of several European countries. The Calling toured the world and was featured on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Top of the Pops UK and Germany, MTV, VH-1, and CD-UK to name a few.
Upon leaving The Calling, Mohler and Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin started a band together called The Jimmy Chamberlin Complex. They signed to Sanctuary Records and together co-wrote and co-produced the group's debut album which featured special appearances by Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), Rob Dickinson (Catherine Wheel) and Bill Medley (Righteous Brothers). Bill Medley is Mohler’s godfather. The bands follow up record ‘The Parable’ was featured in Downbeat's coveted ‘Editors Pick’ in the December 2017 issue.
Mohler joined Macy Gray's band for a year of touring, writing and recording, highlights include headlining famed UK festival Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, performing with Lee Scratch Perry at Royal Festival Hall in England, performing at Fuji Rock, and countless TV performances including the Graham Norton Show, Ellen, Sharon Osbourne, and Late Night with Jay Leno to name a few.
Mohler then began working with Aaron Bruno on a record that would become AwolNation’s debut album ‘Megalithic Symphony’ (Redbull Records). Mohler was the original bassist of the group and played on the band's debut record as well as contributed to the writing. The hit song ‘Sail’ has gone on to sell more than 11 million copies and has been streamed 850,000,000 times.
Being an avid skateboarder himself it was a great honor when skateboarding legend Tony Hawk asked Mohler to be the Musical Director for his own North American Arena Tour called The Boom Boom Huck Jam. Mohler led a five piece band on the road for a two and a half month arena tour, orchestrating the music to the extreme sport's show.
Mohler co-founded the production/writing team Riot City with Rene Arsenault and together they developed, wrote and produced Columbia Records recording artist Conway. Working directly with Lady Gaga and Nile Rogers, Riot City co-produced a version of the Chic classic hit "I Want Your Love" for a 2015 Tom Ford campaign. Riot City also produced ARO which features Aimee Osbourne, daughter of the iconic Ozzy Osbourne from the legendary band Black Sabbath. Riot City has has scored commercials for Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger (featuring Pop Artist Daya), and scored a Finlandia Vodka 3 Part Documentary ‘Journey From the Source’. Riot City’s song Hustler (by Conway) has received several licenses including the hit TV Show Revenge, Good Kids (Netflix) as well the film ‘Kissing Booth’.
In 2017 Mohler started MAKE Records (Ingrooves Distribution) with a longtime friend. The label has signed Pom Poms, Coastal Clouds, The Jimmy Chamberlin Complex and War Tapes. Pom Poms was named one of the Top 14 Bands of the CMJ Festival 2015, as well as receiving major placements including NCIS and ABC’s hit show Station 19.
In 2018 Mohler played upright and electric bass on Dolly Parton's collaboration with famed producer/writer Linda Perry for the movie Dumplin’ starring Jennifer Aniston. Mohler also played bass on two new Ronnie Spector tracks produced by Linda Perry with a release date TBD.
