When Adolphe Sax invented the first saxophone in 1841, he could never have imagined how popular it would become. While the guitar is the main instrument of rock and roll, the saxophone is seen by many to be the main instrument of jazz. Fourth generation sax player, Ryan Kilgore, a native of Atlanta, Georgio has been playing the soulful sounds of the saxophone since age 10. Ryan’s musical inspiration came from his grandfather, Ester Betterson, who was not only in love with music, but also bought Ryans first horn. As a budding musician, Ryan spent many hours mastering his craft and was known for grabbing his horn while watching television sitcom’s to learn TV theme songs. After playing in the band for fours years at Southwest Dekalb High School, Ryan went on to attend Clark Atlanta University and was the first freshman to become drum major, as well as proud member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America Inc.
Ryan has a plethora of accomplishments. Ryan played on the Fighting Temptations soundtrack with vocalist Faith Evans, on the song titled “Heaven Knows”, as well as performed on the Walt Disney movie Country Bears. In 2003, Ryan joined the hugely popular band Sol Factor. He then went on to work with legendary producers/writers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis as well as the phenomenal Stevie Wonder. Ryan is also no stranger to the film industry. He has made cameo appearances in the 20th Century Fox’s Drumline, Paramount Pictures Fighting Temptations, and Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Ryan has been Stevie Wonder’s touring saxophonist for the last 5 years and has shared the stage with the likes of Peter White, Cherrelle, Bobby Brown, John Legend, Boney James, Robin Thicke, Lalah Hathaway, Earth Wind & Fire, and Marsha Ambrosious to name a few. He has played at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and for several years in a row was selected to play in the house band for the Soul Train Music Awards.
Ryan is an exceptional saxophone player who strives to help continue to instill in all people the importance of music’s role in the enrichment of the human spirit. His first album, critically acclaimed, “A Conversation With Love”, was released in 2009. Ryan’s 2011 release, “The SaxTape Vol. 1 - Changing the Face Of Jazz”, draws from Jazz, R & B, and Hip Hop but refuses to be pinned down to any one tag. Ryan’s inspiration for “The SaxTape” was to reach a brand new audience, to reach those people who may have never listened to Jazz before. This modern take on the music is still very much Jazz in essence and through this approach Ryan has been able to reach individuals across every demographic. It is an undeniable fact that whenever a new development occurred in the history of Jazz, a saxophonist was never too far away. Ryan’s mission to “Change The Face Of Jazz”, will surely amplify with the release of his forthcoming album and “The SaxTape Vol. 2” both released in the summer of 2012.
